Classes

Basic Personal Defense Readiness ™ series – This course is for everyone who could ever be exposed to violence … anyone who doesn’t  live inside a bubble. Course topics include: SPEAR System fundamentals, tools for detecting danger and avoiding, diffusion techniques, legal and ethical considerations, effective counter attacks, fear management and more. The class is a combination of lecture, discussion, drills and force on force scenarios where students will get to pressure test what they have learned. The course is a five-week series and meets once a week with a make-up week at the end for missed classes.

Men’s class– This course isjess designed to prepare men for the types of real life violence they may face. While self-defense principles are the same across gender and age lines, men and women face different types of violence, different types of attacks and have different fears. This course covers: SPEAR System fundamentals, effective striking/counter attacks, defenses against common street attacks, fear management, mental preparation for violence, avoidance, familial protection, legal considerations and more. The class is a combination of lecture, discussion, drills and force on force scenarios where students will get to pressure test what they have learned.

Women’s class– This course is designed to empower women to protect themselves and addresses issues and fears women face in the real world. Course topics include: SPEAR System fundamentals, rape prevention, effective striking/attacks, demystification of the woman’s role as protector/warrior, fear management, mental preparation for violence, avoidance, defense against common attacks for women, legal considerations and more. The class is a combination of lecture, discussion, drills and force on force scenarios where students will get to pressure test what they have learned.

Teen class– Teens face violence the same as the rest of us. Preparing them to detect, avoid and diffuse bad situations is every bit as important as the academic skills they learn in school. This series is designed to empower teens with confidence as they grow into the world around them. Portions of this course are currently taught in to sophomore physical education in the Roseville Joint Union High School District. Course topics include: SPEAR System fundamentals, rape prevention, effective striking/attacks, understanding of self-defense, bullying, teen dating violence, rape prevention, legal considerations, fear management, mental preparation for violence, avoidance and more. The class is a combination of lecture, discussion, drills and force on force scenarios where students will get to pressure test what they have learned.

College-bound seniors – For many graduating high school seniors, going away to college is an exciting time of independence. But with that independence comes more responsibility than ever before for keeping themselves safe. College parties, new friends and relationships combined with less parental oversight offers more risks than many students have had to face in their lives. Course content includes: SPEAR System fundamentals, rape prevention, effective striking/attacks, understanding of self-defense, bullying, teen dating violence, rape prevention, legal considerations, fear management, mental preparation for violence, avoidance and more. We will discuss and prepare for common scenarios college students find themselves in as it relates to dating, alcohol and drugs and the campus scene. The class is a combination of lecture, discussion, drills and force on force scenarios where students will get to pressure test what they have learned.

Parents and teachers - This course is for everyone who could ever be exposed to violence … anyone who doesn’t  live inside a bubble. Course topics include: SPEAR System fundamentals, tools for detecting danger and avoiding, diffusion techniques, legal and ethical considerations, effective counter attacks, fear management and more. Class content will be specifically geared toward parents and teachers who often have children to factor in as a part of their scenario. In addition to personal protection skills, discussion will include how to talk to kids about danger and violence and how to give them tools to protect themselves. The class is a combination of lecture, discussion, drills and force on force scenarios where students will get to pressure test what they have learned.

Kids – Like it or not, our kids are exposed to the same dangers that we are as adults. Giving them simple tools to avoid danger when they recognize it, ways to diffuse a bad situation and skills to defend themselves only when necessary is key to preparing them to Live Ready. This class is designed to be fun and empowering and to teach kids to take responsibility for their own safety. Class will be a combination of lecture, discussion, drills and age appropriate scenarios. Class content is designed and age appropriate for kids ages 6-13 but others may be eligible. Advanced Skills – For those who want to continue their learning experience Nor-Cal Self Defense offers an advanced skill session. Course topics include: Weapons defenses, using improvised weapons, ground fighting, additional scenarios, improved striking skills and defenses against the most common street attacks.
